So you’ve saved hard for you annual ski trip. You intend to ski hard and party hard, taking advantage of the mountain and the apres ski bars. I know I’m going to sound like your mother, but here’s a few apres ski tips to help you enjoy your week.
- Location: Most mountain restaurants and bars do not stay open much after the last lift, after all why would they if nearly all of their customers have skied back to the resort.
Try to ensure that the pubs and clubs you visit are relatively close to your accommodation. The ski buses don’t run all night and taxis can be hard to come by at 4 o’clock in the morning – it can be a long, tiring and cold walk back to an out of town chalet in your ski boots.
- *Altitude: Alcohol has a greater and faster effect at altitude! Good or a bad thing? I’ll let you decide…
- Budget: Make sure your wallet can handle your nightlife – resort prices can be as steep as the pistes.
- Happy Hours: Usually longer than an hour, find out when and where and make it a happy night.
- Insurance: Don’t drink and ski – your insurance will be invalid if you have an accident while being under the influence.
Don’t let tonight ruin tomorrow if you’ve paid for tomorrow’s skiing – you can always large it up at home.

*Alcohol and Altitude
The presence of alcohol in the blood interferes with the normal use of oxygen by the body (histotoxic hypoxia); this is the cause of the feeling of drunkenness.
Reduced air pressure at high altitude and the reduced ability of haemoglobin to absorb oxygen, leads to an increased effect of alcohol in the blood. The speed at which you will be affected by alcohol and the degree to which you will be affected is much more pronounced at altitude than at sea level.
