Recipe for Jagertee; Hunter’s Tea.

Jagertee Recipe, only to be drunk Apres Ski

I Get Knocked Down, But I Get Up Again.

pop quiz: the lyric above is from what song and artist? clue: political activists from Burnley extol the virtues of  demon drinks.

Never, I repeat, never try skiing after drinking jagertee. Often served in 250ml jugs this heady mix of rum, brandy, wine, tea and spices can’t fail to warm you right down to your toes.

Originally created for hunters, jagertee is a firm favourite for après ski. Jagertee is at number ten in my Top 10 Vegetarian Meals available in Austrian Ski resorts: Yes, you can claim it isn’t food and therefore not a meal; but after having some you won’t be in a position to argue!

There are lots of pre-mixed versions available in Europe, don’t get it confused with Jagermeister; jagertee is quite different although as potent!

Jagertee Recipe Ingredients.

  • 250ml strong Tea
  • 250ml Orange Juice
  • 3 Cloves
  • A piece of Cinnamon Stick (4cm)
  • 4 slices Lemon
  • 250ml Red Wine
  • plus 250ml Spiced Rum
  • and 250ml Plum Brandy (or any other liqueur lurking in the back of your cupboard)
  • 100g Brown Sugar

How to Make Jagertee or Hunter’s Tea.

  1. Pour the tea and orange juice into a pan with the spices and lemons.
  2. Bring it to the boil.
  3. Turn the heat down before adding the wine, rum and brandy.
  4. Cover and warm through, taking care not to boil.
  5. Remove from the heat, strain, add sugar to taste.
  6. Makes about 6 cups: serve in warmed tea cups from a pot for best effect.
